How to Manage Curly hair?
Hello there!
Here is another one from our blog-How to manage curly hair? Only girls/boys with curly hair can understand the trouble it gives. No doubt curly hair can look so glamorous and classy if managed and styled well. I am one of the girls with straight hair who wishes to have curly hair (they say grass is greener on the other side). But only those with curly hair know that not everyday your curls look effortless and beautiful and having a good hair day comes once in a while.
But now here we are going to talk about different ways you can fall in love with your curls and stop fighting them. With the right hair care it is possible, the first thing you can do even before spending on hair care is understanding what type of hair you have and what kind of curl your hair naturally falls into. Now there are so many different types of curls out there: wavy, curly and coil curls. Now within wavy hair there are sub categories, for example some hair might look like it's straight but has some twist and turns and some might look like they are curls but in reality they aren't actually curls. The same thing goes with curly hair. You have different types of curls from soft curls that might look like waves but are actually curls and the ultra curls make it seem as if you are blessed with a head full of hair as they add natural volume and they look like twisted pasta. And the last type of curl is coily or also known as kinky hair. There are different variations in this type of curls as well, it starts with coiled hair, these are those bouncy spring curls and when stretched it is 2 times the length when it's coiled in a curl. The net type of coily hair is called zig zag. They are literally curls that are in the form of zigzag patterns and they are small zigzags everywhere. And the last type of coiled curl is called a tight coil. They are curls and super tight like how a new wire is wrapped when there is no place between each twist in the coil. I love all these kinds of curls because they all look good any day. Even in hair styling or bridal styling it's so important to understand the type of curl one has so that you can use the natural bouncy or volume to achieve a better outcome .
Now that we have understood the different types of curls and maybe that helped you understand your curls better, let's get into hair care in brief as to what all products are beneficial for curls and that will help you fall in love with them. There are so many hair care products out in the market nowadays catering to every hair texture and type. So sometimes it could get confusing as to what product is best suited for you.
1- Cleansing your hair
Cleansing is the first step for any beauty related thing and for hair cleaning is basically shampooing your hair. Now it's super important to use the right kind of shampoo which is not harming your hair in any way. While choosing your shampoo, always go for shampoo that is free of chemicals, chemicals like paraben sulfates are very toxic for the hair. Another very important thing to keep in mind is to not use too much shampoo because excessive shampoo can lead to dry hair and for curly hair having moisture is very important as that is what makes your hair look healthy and also always use cold water or lukewarm water while washing hair because hot water removes the natural oil from you scalp which is also needed for you hair.
2- Pre-shampoo hair care
Now as we all know 80% of people with curly hair do not brush their hair as they feel like if they do their hair looks frizzy or breaks off. So that's where your pre-shampoo care comes in. It is super important for curly hair as it helps in toning down frizzness and also helps in detangling your hair. Pre shampoo care is basically either a hair mask or an oil which has conditioner. These products help in keeping hair nourished and are very important for curly hair. Even if you are styling hair it's important to keep in mind the quality of hair and advise them to use hair masks if you feel like their hair needs nourishment, it also helps you if you want to do a nice hair updo.
The role of a conditioner is basically to make your hair feel softer to the touch and easier to handle. Your hair usually feels rough when it is either dry or frizzy and as we read earlier one of the main problems faced in curly hair is dryness and frizziness. Now another reason why conditioning curly hair is important is detangling. Everyone knows detangling curly dry hair is a task, so an easy trick is to use a wide teeth comb and brush your hair in the shower just after applying conditioner. Since your hair already has conditioner on, it will just allow the comb to glide through your hair effortlessly and you won't be in pain. This way you can even avoid frizziness because you are brushing it while giving it moisture. This also helps in hair styling as your hair will be tangle free and moisturized which makes hair designing easier and quicker.
4- Moisture lock
How many people make the mistake of stopping right after the conditioner but for curly we have secured the moisture in and there are some products for the same. But this step is done on damp hair after washing your hair. Now the most common product that everyone has heard of is leave-in conditioner which is really good in defining your curls and adds more texture to your curls. But moisture lock is a method of finishing your hair care routine with oil in the end. So you start with your pre-shampoo care, then you shampoo and condition your hair. After that you apply your leave-in conditioner and then you finish it off with a small amount of oil on the tips of your hair. This is called a moisture lock or loc method. If your hair is fine or you have much more open looser curls then you can try using hair milk as well.
5- Curls defining
So this an optional step but a highly recommended step, now we are aware that there are different types of curls. So curl defining products just help the hair in forming the natural curl of the hair. Like if someone has spring-like curls a curl defining cream will aid in defining those curls even more. So for different textures and types of curl;s we have different types of products. So it is very important to first understand the type of curl you have before buying a curl defining cream. Even as a hairstylist it's important in hair designing to know curls and understand how to style them.
